Lesson 1 (from Part One: September)
Objective
Students will assess how each student's voice narrating the story has a particular style as they are introduced in the first chapter. They will assess font, voice, and tone for each student to see how the novel distinguishes their voices and characters in the beginning to set a standard for the rest of the novel.
Lesson
Individual Activity: Which students' voice did you like most when you were reading? How would you explain their voice and character? Write a one-paragraph response, and then find two characteristics in the chapter that portray their voice.
Group Activity: Divide into seven groups, one for each student from the novel. Have each group come up with at least five characteristics of the voice of their student. For example, Jessica speaks in acts like a play, Danielle includes her prayers, Anna's font for her name is in small type. Share out...
