Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to compare and contrast the characters of Eileen and Alice. Both have jobs in the literary world, Alice as a successful novelist and Eileen as an editor. Eileen is more demonstratively emotional, and Alice has often been told she is sometimes intimidating to people. Both young women are struggling to find meaning, beauty, and stable romantic relationships.

Class Discussion: What is Eileen's family background and profession? What about Alice's family background and profession? What are some of the two friends' most significant similarities? What are some of their most significant differences?
Small Group Activity: Divide the class into small groups and ask each group of students to create a Venn diagram with two circles, placing Eileen's name in one circle and Alice's name in the other. Students should go back through Part I and document each character's...
