· In “How It Began,” Qian recounted the earliest memory her father had.

· When her father was four, he was shooting a toy gun at birds as he walked to the town square.

· At the square, he saw the shapes of two men hanging from a tree.

· It was 1996 and China’s Cultural Revolution had just begun.

· Three years later when Wang Lao Shi was seven, his eldest brother was arrested for criticizing Mao Zedong in writing.

· From then on the Wang family would endure beatings and public humiliation as a “treasonous” (2) family.

· They were no longer honored for the actions of the grandfather who had shielded the village from the rape and pillage of the Japanese occupation.
