Objective

During her argument with Kyle, Kendra calls the Homecoming ceremony elitist, amongst other things. This lesson will focus on elitism in general, as well as how it factors into Beastly.

Lesson

Class Discussion: Define elitism. Discuss how elitism is shown in this story.

Journal Entry: Have each student write one or two paragraphs detailing their opinions of elitism.

Class Debate: Have students split into groups to debate whether Homecoming is an elitist ceremony.

Homework: Have each student write an essay explaining their opinions about Homecoming. Is Homecoming a good tradition for schools to build morale and school spirit, or is it simply an exercise in elitism? These should be persuasive essays.
