Objective
Students will meticulously analyze the different elements of the book's cover art in order to deepen their understanding of the connection between the work's themes and the cover art that is chosen to underscore these themes.
Visual literacy is a very important skill to foster in today's world and the design featured on the cover of Zora Neale Hurston's book Barracoon provides an excellent opportunity to teach students skills in visual literacy. One edition of the book cover, below its inclusion of the subtitle The Story of the Last ‘Black Cargo’, features a large photograph of Cudjo, the subject of the text’s focus. On one side of the cover, the only element with color is featured in the depiction of a ripe peach to symbolize the part of the United States focused upon within the narrative.
