• It was July of 1927.
• Three of the four men responsible for the deal that resulted in Cudjo's status as a slave were brothers in the Meaher family.
• They were Tim, Jim, and Burns Meaher.
• The fourth man was Captain Foster, who owned and sailed the Clotilde, the ship on which Cudjo was brought to America.
• The owner of the Clotilde deceptively reported that the ship had been on a mission to retrieve red palm oil.
• Importing slaves was already illegal in America by that time.
