In this chapter, readers meet the Kawashima family, Japanese natives living in Korea during World War II. Daughter Yoko is asked to dance at a local hospital for injured soldiers. There she meets Corporal Matsumura who will become an important figure in her life. Facing persecution from the Korean Communists, the Kawashima family must leave their home in order to survive. This lesson will help students to acquaint themselves with Yoko's background, upbringing, and current circumstances.
