Kyoshi

The protagonist of the novel, this character is an orphan taken in by the companions of the previous Avatar. Noted early as an earthbender of small talent, she comes to be recognized as the true Avatar, approaching the role from an unusual position.

Jianzhu

An earthbender and companion to the previous Avatar, this character makes deft political maneuvers and acquires no small amount of power. His ambition and drive make him the major antagonist of the novel.

Kelsang

An airbender and companion to the previous Avatar, this character takes a particular interest in the protagonist from an early age. He is her father- and mentor-figure, despite his guilt over old and continuing wrongs.

Rangi

A firebender, this character is a bodyguard to the Avatar and comes to be the protagonist’s lover. An exceptional, honorable warrior, she also serves as the protagonist's firebending instructor.
