Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1)

Objective

Students study Anya Seton's background in Chapter 1 to develop an understanding of why Seton wrote Avalon. They will discover what Seton's motivations were for writing Avalon and learn how Seton went about writing this novel. The objective of this lesson is for students to research Anya Seton and identify key elements in her life that may have led to her writing Avalon.

Lesson

1) Divide the class into groups of 3 or 4. Have groups come up with at least 4 questions to research about Seton and write them on a research graphic organizer sheet. Then, using available research tools, have the groups find the answers to those questions. (Teachers will want to make sure the groups have different types of questions to make sure the class as a whole learns as much as possible about Seton from the group research.)
