Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 29))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze Alfa's experience of his best friend Mademba's death on the battlefield. In Part I, Alfa is haunted and perhaps, by his own admission, driven a bit mad by, Mademba's brutal death at the hands of a German soldier. Mademba is disemboweled by a seriously injured German on the battlefield that everyone had taken for dead. Mademba's death is long and he suffers terribly, begging Alfa several times to kill him and end his agony.
