Objective
Students will examine the historical context of the American Revolution and the major players on both sides, with a particular focus on black people’s lives during the war. In Ashes, Anderson develops a richly detailed world that draws from the history of the Revolutionary War. Beginning the book with knowledge of this time period in mind will increase student engagement and comprehension.

Class Discussion: What was life like for black people in America in 1776? What were the causes of the American Revolution? How did slavery fit into this cause?
