Chapter 1, Who Was Archimedes?

"Archimedes and the Door of Science" is a biography of Archimedes, the ancient Greek mathematician. The object of this lesson is to discuss the genre of the book.

Lesson

1) Research: Research: Look up the following terms and write definitions for each word: genre, non-fiction, fiction, autobiography, and biography. Write the answers to these questions: What is the difference between non-fiction and fiction? Would a biography or an autobiography require more research on the part of the author? Why? Who tells the story in a biography? In an autobiography? What is the difference between a biography and an autobiography?

2) Class Discussion: What is the subject matter of "Archimedes and the Door of Science"? Look at the chapter headings of the book. Is his life the focus of the book? Does the book cover the entire life of Archimedes? Who is narrating the story...
