Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1-3)

Objective

This lesson introduces students to Jacqueline Woodson’s novel Another Brooklyn. Students will research the author, read Chapter 1, and analyze the narrative style of the novel. Another Brooklyn is narrated from the first-person perspective of August, the novel’s protagonist. The author sets up a framing device in the opening of the novel that will be revisited in later chapters. This framing device establishes why August is looking back at her childhood as she comes to terms with her father’s recent death and, as the narrative unfolds, with her mother’s death long ago.

Lesson

Group Activity: Assign students to groups of 3-4 each. As a group, read the opening quote and Chapter 1. Discuss the information related and identify the framing device that is used here. How is a framing device defined? Why do authors employ them? Retain notes from your discussion.
