Annie's mother is a believer in Obeah, the island's rituals that ward off evil spirits. Annie and her mother bathe in special oils and tree barks to help ward off evil. Does your family have any special home remedies? Tell about their history in your family and demonstrate if possible. These might be as simple as gargling with salt water for a sore throat.
Calypso music and dancing
The island music of Annie's time was Calypso music although the music and dancing was not permitted at her British-run school. Bring in Calypso music for students to hear or videos that demonstrate Calypso dancing. Let the students dance along if they would like.
