Objective
The reader is introduced to the main characters of the novel in this chapter. The reader learns one likes to knit, another once enjoyed wearing miniskirts, and another is suffering from cancer. It's clear that the women are all very good friends.
The objective of this lesson is to examine the topic of friendship in real life, as well as in the book.

Based on what is known from the prologue, what do the students feel kept the book club members friends for so long?
Class Discussion 2:
Discuss the benefits of life-long friendship. Also, have the students discuss examples of people who they know of that have friendships or marriages that have lasted for a long time. What conclusions can be drawn about friendship? Do a lot of people stay friends for life? Why or why not?
