Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1: "Fall 1952")
Objective
This lesson introduces students to Khaled Hosseini’s novel And the Mountains Echoed. In the class, students will read Chapter 1: “Fall 1952,” and will research the author of the novel, its genre, and the historical context of the setting. Students will also identify and discuss the narrative style and mood established in the chapter. And the Mountains Moved is a novel that is related in nonlinear chronology and from several different points of view, each focused on a different character’s story. The first chapter comes from the first-person perspective of Saboor as he tells his son and daughter a bedtime story.

Group Assignment: Assign students to groups of 3-4 each to read Chapter 1: “Fall 1952.” As a group, develop a project that examines the narrative style of the opening chapter. From whose perspective is the story told? Is the narrative related in the present or past...
