Lesson 1 (from "The Lost Year")
Objective
This lesson introduces students to Tomas Rivera’s novel And the Earth Did Not Devour Him. Students will research the author; read the first chapter of the novel; define literary vignettes; and analyze the narrative style, mood, and tone in the opening of the work. The narrative begins with “The Lost Year,” in which a third-person narrator describes an unnamed protagonist who struggles to remember his past. Following this chapter is a brief vignette focusing on a boy and his mother.
