Lesson 1 (from Foreword - Chapter 1)
Objective
This lesson introduces students to the nonfiction book An Invisible Thread: The True Story of an 11-Year-Old Panhandler, a Busy Sales Executive, and an Unlikely Meeting with Destiny. Students will research the author and the book’s publication, read the Foreword and the Introduction, and analyze the narrative style established in the opening of the work. An Invisible Thread follows the real-life story of Laura Schroff and the friendship that she formed with a young man growing up in dire circumstances in New York in the mid-1980s. The narrative is written from Laura’s first-person perspective as she relates this story of friendship, its span of over three decades, and the impacts it has had on her life.
