Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:

Essay Topic 1

Arthur’s statements to Gerald indicate he is aware of a difference in class between the Birling and the Croft families. In fact, class is a theme running throughout the play. Write a compare/contrast essay exploring the difference in class between the Birling and the Croft families and how that affects how each responds to the revelations about them in the play.

Essay Topic 2

Though other settings are mentioned in the play’s dialogue, the entirety of the play “An Inspector Calls” is set inside one room in the Birling home with no time interruption between acts. Write an essay exploring how the author’s choice to set the story in only one location affects the play.

Essay Topic 3

One of the themes introduced in the play is that of universal morality. Is there a universal ethic to which we must all subscribe? Write an essay exploring whether or not you agree with Inspector Goole that the five other major characters – Arthur, Sybil, Eric, Sheila, and Gerald – are responsible for the suicide of Eva Smith/Daisy Renton/Mrs. Birling.
