· The play opens with a description of the set in the drawing room of house of the Birling family, a wealthy family that lives in Brumley, England.
· The furniture and furnishings are “substantial and comfortable and old-fashioned but not cozy and homelike” (5).
· On stage are Arthur Birling and his wife Sybil, their two children Sheila and Eric, Sheila’s fiance Gerald Croft, and the parlor maid Edna.
· The five diners are dressed formally for dinner, with the men in tails and white ties.
· Arthur thanks Edna for clearing the table and offers port, a sweet after-dinner red wine, to Gerald and Sybil, who both accept.
· Sybil dismisses Edna, who exits.
