Lieutenant General Joseph F. Carroll
This character enters the seminary at age twelve but returns home at twenty-four, just before promising celibacy and being ordained. He studies law at night and, after graduation, is hired by the FBI.
Mary Morrissey Carroll
This character is a wise-cracking, redheaded working girl. She is the second child of eight, whose father abandons them. She quits school at fourteen, lies about her age to become a telephone operator and at twenty-three is a supervisor.
Dennis Carroll
This character is a younger brother of James and is the most philosophically like James. He is a practicing vegetarian who leaves the country as a draft dodger.
Brian Carroll
This character is one of James' younger brothers and is the one that most closely follows in their father's footsteps. He becomes an FBI agent and, in the tradition, carries Joseph's gun and badge.
