Collect rocks from the neighborhood around your home and school. Then, using the methods Dillard outlines in her memoir, identify and preserve each of the rocks. Bring the collection to school to share with your classmates.

Board Game

Create a board game based on the events of the memoir. Think of interesting ways that game play could progress, build the board and pieces, and be prepared to present your final project to the class, ready to play.

Alternate Ending

Write a scene giving the memoir an alternate ending. What might you change? How might the message of the memoir be different if certain elements of the storyline were different? Write a short report discussing your motivations for the plot changes.
