Among the Free is a young adult novel by Margaret Peterson Haddix. The novel is the seventh and final installment in the Shadow Children series, and relates the story of Luke Garner, a young boy who helps to overthrow a totalitarian government and its attempts to control population growth by limiting the number of children born into families. In this lesson, students are introduced to the book, will read and discuss the first two chapters, and will research the author.
