Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1-5)
Objective
Students will learn to evaluate characters based on specific criteria, including how the author chooses to introduce them.
During the opening chapter of the novel, Amina begins describing her interaction with Soojin, including that they are best friends but opposites in many ways. Emily sits with them at lunch, and Amina's friendship with Soojin begins undergoing changes that Amina does not initially embrace.
Lesson
Group Discussion: Lead the class in a discussion of the friendship between Amina and Soojin up to this point. Encourage students to consider why their friendship will have to endure changes over the coming years and what other changes may occur.
Individual Writing: Have students take a few minutes to make a list of the most important factors in Amina's friendship with Soojin. Note any of those factors that would make Amina reluctant to include another person into their relationship.
