1. Describe Karl's first vision of the Statue of Liberty.

As Karl enters New York Harbor, he watches the Statue of Liberty and it seems to him that the statue is surrounded by a sudden burst of sunlight and "free winds" (3). In her raised hand, he does not see a torch, but instead sees a sword that seems to him to be lifted very high.

2. Why is Karl on the ship?

Karl's parents have sent him away to America because he had a sexual encounter with a servant that resulted in her bearing a child. His uncle believes that they do not want to have to pay child support.

3. Explain how Karl's inability to keep track of his possessions causes complications in "The Stoker."

Karl is on deck with his trunk when he realizes that he has left his umbrella below. He decides to go retrieve the umbrella and gets lost and then is subsequently caught up in the stoker's concerns. In the meantime, he has left his trunk with a near stranger, and by the time he is able to leave the ship, he has no idea where the trunk has gotten to.
