Lesson 1 (from Section 1: Chapter I, "The Stoker")
Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is to acquire background information about Amerika and Franz Kafka. Kafka's work has been enormously influential in Western culture, and yet students may have very little idea who this man was. This lesson introduces students to Kafka and his work, then focuses specifically on the background of the novel Amerika. Students will read more effectively armed with basic information about Kafka's work and the status of Amerika as an unfinished novel.
Lesson
Written Assignment: Go online and look up the meaning of the word "Kafkaesque." Write a paragraph in which you explain the definition in your own words and then describe a scenario--from real life or from fiction--that is an example of a "Kafkaesque" plot or situation.
Small Group Research Activity: Divide the class into groups of three. Ask the group members to work together to answer the following questions...
