Lesson 1 (from Prologue)
Objective
Students will learn the meaning of "post-apocalyptic" literature. In order to help students understand the premise of the novel better, they will conjecture what the future of America will be like in 60 years before they start to read the book. Students will see how American War sets itself up from the beginning as a post-apocalyptic novel by finding textual clues in the preface.

Class Discussion: What invention do you think has affected the world the most in the last ten years? What historical events have affected the world in which we live? What do you know about the Civil War and how it affected the United States? What meteorological or geographical changes are happening now that you think may affect the United States in the next 50 years? What social trends may affect our future?
