Objective

Students will acquire background information on James Salter and his characteristic style.

Although Salter is a highly regarded author, he is unlikely to be familiar to students. The prose style that has won Salter such praise is distinctive and requires more reader involvement than most. Salter's narrators adopt a kind of laconic intimacy that demands that readers actively participate in the construction of plot, characterization, and meaning in order to comprehend even the surface level of the story. This lesson introduces students to Salter and to his characteristic style and offers them some guided practice in reading his prose before they attempt to read "American Express."
