Lesson 1 (from Section 1: Chapter 1)
Objective
Students will explore the conventions of comic art.
Graphic novels utilize the conventions of comic art to convey meaning. Students will have varying levels of fluency in understanding these conventions, and few will know all of the terminology needed to discuss and analyze a graphic novel. This lesson prepares students to read and discuss American Born Chinese more effectively by introducing them to the terminology and concepts most important to understanding the graphic novel.
