• American Born Chinese is structured into nine chapters that alternate focus between the three main characters. Each chapter is preceded by an icon that indicates which character it will focus on.
• Chapter 1 focuses on the Monkey King.
• The first page of Chapter 1 is a "splash," a single-panel illustration that establishes the setting.
• The narrative caption reads: "One bright and starry night, the gods, the goddesses, the demons, and the spirits gathered in heaven for a dinner party" (7).
• The scene is a party where various spirits, gods, etc. stand around talking and eating.
• Lao-Tzu flirts with a younger female character and a god boasts about the thunderstorm he created the night before.
