Objective
Objective: Setting is a component of literary works and is often particularly important in stage productions. The introduction to Act I establishes the setting of this play. The objective of this lesson is to learn about the setting of "The Amen Corner."
1) Class Discussion: What is setting? What all is involved in setting? What does the setting introduced in Act I tell you about "The Amen Corner" and its characters? Be specific.
2) Small Group Discussion: Have small groups discuss the relationship of the time period in the setting. The play is set in the 1950s. Are there elements of the setting that tell the reader about the time period? Is knowing the period in which the play is set important, or could this play be set today just as well as the 1950s?
