ELIZABETH - In this chapter, the reader is introduced to Elizabeth Cameron, a young woman being forced into a marriage she has no control over. The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the character of Elizabeth Cameron and to discuss whether or not she is a sympathetic character.

Lesson

1.) As a class, create a list of adjectives used to describe Elizabeth Cameron. Do you think Elizabeth is a sympathetic character? Why or why not?

2.) As a class, compare / contrast the way Elizabeth's servants view her character with the way Elizabeth's family views her character. What is the same about their views? What is different? Is there anything unexpected / surprising in this comparison?

3.) Do you think Elizabeth is an eligible young woman for marriage? Divide the class into two groups for a cross classroom debate. After 15 minutes, add another complication: How does...
