Objective

All Quiet on the Western Front takes place during World War I. Called "The Great War" and "The War to End All Wars", it was humanity's first experience with total, global war. The human toll was staggering, and it was one of the most significant events in human history.

Lesson

1 - Class Discussion: When did the war start, and when did it end? Why did it start? What was WWI like? How was it fought? What is "trench warfare?" What tactics were used? What military technology existed in that time? Could the war have been prevented?

2 - Research: Each student writes a one-page report explaining the causes of World War I.

3 - Group work and presentation: Divide the class into groups of three to four. Each group chooses an aspect of the war and explains it to the class in the form of a five-minute presentation...
