Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 81))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze George's and Catherine's early relationship in Part I. From the beginning, Catherine has some misgivings about George, at times finding him cold, callous, and awkward. Right after George breaks up with her when they are both in their twenties, Catherine discovers she is pregnant, and George wants her to have an abortion. Catherine refuses and prepares to become a single mother, but George unexpectedly asks her to marry him several months later. George and Catherine's relationship is not grounded in mutual love and affection, but rather out of a sense of duty and societal pressure.
