James Herriot
This character is the author of this novel. At the time of the book, he has two years experience as a veterinary surgeon and has just been promoted to partner. Although he has the necessary experience, this character makes it clear that he often feels helpless when trying to treat difficult cases. There are several places in the book where he admits in his writing that he simply hasn't known what was wrong with an animal. Instead of giving up, he thinks and researches until he finds a diagnosis and treatment if there is a treatment available. He still feels awed by the miracle of birth and new life each time another lamb is born.
