Objective

The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze how Brown describes the setting of this novel in Part I. In Part I, Brown sets the scene for the reader; it is either modern-day or near future in an America and a world where the majority of the population has died from a Flu pandemic. Society has completely broken down, and it is every person for themself. It is within this backdrop that Andrew and Jamie, two teenage boys who have both lost their entire families, meet.

Lesson

Class Discussion: What details does Brown include in Part I that inform the reader about the post-apocalyptic landscape? What choices have Andrew and Jamie made about their own survival? How do people take care of themselves?
