• Matt explains that when he was born, his aunt saw all of his dark curly hair and rushed out to the waiting room to tell the family that Matt’s mother had given birth to a girl.

• When she came back in and learned that Matt was a boy, she had to go tell the family that she had been mistaken.

• Matt sees the incident as both a foreshadowing of his coming identity confusion and as a sign that society is much too obsessed with the binary gender system.
