The author introduces Casey Singleton and chooses for the reader's first impression of her to be that of a single mom. This lesson will discuss Casey and how she is introduced.
Lesson
1) Individual Work: Have each student make a list of what he or she learned about Casey in this section. Come together as a class and develop one final list describing Casey.
2) Class Discussion: Why do you think the author chose to make Casey a single mom? Why would being a single mom make the stakes higher for Casey? Why do you think the author has Casey's daughter be gone on a trip during the investigation?
3) Partner Discussion: Have each student get a partner and discuss the following questions: Why attributes does Casey have that make her good at her job? Where is she the most vulnerable? Do you think any of the concerns...
