Lesson 1 (from Part I (Chapters 1 - 7))
Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze the symbolism of spinning one's own clothes and of the charkha itself in Part I. In this section, Anjali's Ma learns how to spin material into thread for making khadri, or simple garments that are entirely produced in India. Ma's joining of the freedom movement and her decision to spin and teach spinning represents her commitment to the cause of severing India's dependence on England or "The Raj," the long-time colonizer and, in her view, oppressor of the country.

Class Discussion: What is a charkha and why is it important to the freedom movement? How does Anjali feel about making and wearing plain clothes at first, and how does her attitude change over time? How do Anjali's neighbors greet the advent of hers and her family's change in clothing?
