• "Afterward" is divided into five sections. Part "I" begins with the cryptic dialogue "Oh, there is one, of course, but you'll never know it" (83).
• It is an early December evening, and Mary Boyne remembers the bright June day upon which she was given this piece of information. Ominously, the reader learns that "its latent significance" has only just become clear to Mary (83).
• The comment was made by her and her husband Ned's friend and cousin, Alida Stair, in reference to the house, "Lyng," in whose library Mary is currently standing.
• Mary and Ned, Americans, depended on Alida for help in house hunting when they decided to move to England.
• Alida had encouraged the pair to buy several other properties...
