1. Who is Qassim?
Qassim is Khalifa's father. He was born in a small village in Gujarat, India. His family was Muslim and poor. He attended a mosque school and then a government school. HIs father was a tax collector. Qassim sat for a scholarship and won a place at an English-medium school in Bombay. After school, he joined a landowner's bookkeeping team in Africa. He settled there, married, and had Khalifa and his siblings.
2. How was Khalifa educated?
Khalifa's father taught him to read and write and to understand the basics of arithmetic. When Khalifa was 11 or so, he was sent to a private tutor in a nearby town who taught him mathematics, bookkeeping, and an elementary English vocabulary.
3. What was Khalifa's first job?
After Khalifa finished his education with the tutor, his father wrote to the Gujarati banker brothers and asked if they had a position for Khalifa. He was hired as a clerk to enter figures in a ledger and keep records up to date.
