Objective
The objective of this lesson is to examine the political situation in Chapters 1 and 2 in Afterlives, and what is revealed about colonialism. Events in Chapters 1 and 2 take place during the time the Germans are trying to secure their power in East Africa. They brutally put down any resistance to their authority.

Class Discussion: How would you describe the political situation in Chapters 1 and 2? What are some major uprisings that occur in Chapters 1 and 2? How are the Germans working to secure their power in East Africa? What methods do the Germans use to secure their power? How do the Africans make the Germans struggle to keep their power? How do the Africans suffer through the totalitarian methods of securing power? What is life like for the Africans during colonialism? What is revealed about colonialism?
Activity: Divide the students into small groups. Have each group discuss German...
