Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the author’s background and personal interest in the subject matter reflected in the book. Julia Alvarez is an American-Dominican writer. She has published both fiction and nonfiction works, and has received awards such as the Pura Belpré and Américas Awards for her books for young readers, the Hispanic Heritage Award, and the F. Scott Fitzgerald Award. In 2013, she received the National Medal of Arts from President Obama.
