The objective of this lesson is to analyze Haruki Murakami's background and consider why he may have chosen to write this story. Haruki Murakami is a Japanese writer, and this lesson will encourage students to consider his credibility.

Individual Assignment: What do you currently know about Haruki Murakami? Write down any facts you know, and be prepared to share them with the class. Then, take a look at the author's blurb on your book. What are you able to glean from a review of this information?
Class Discussion: Come together as a class to discuss what you know about Murakami. Does the fact that Murakami grew up in Kobe give him more credibility when writing about the earthquakes? Why or why not? What do you make of the fact that he has won so many prizes for his books?
