Essay Topics

Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:

Essay Topic 1

Write an essay about vocabulary differences in English speaking countries. Use Australian words such as bore, cattle station, walkabout, and others in the novel to illustrate the point that language changes from culture to culture. Note in your essay that English as the second language of the world is constantly being altered by the introduction of usage influenced by other languages. End with your opinion of what is good or bad about different meanings for the same words in other countries.

Essay Topic 2

Write an essay on morality and religion. Using Willstown as an example, note the high moral standards, especially in regard towards women. Then note that there is not church in the town and the wedding takes place in the Shire Hall. Discuss where you think the morality comes from and whether Willstown actually needs a church as it grows into a town like Alice springs.

Essay Topic 3

Write an essay on achieving your dreams. Note in your essay how Jean Paget fulfilled her dreams through hard work and good advice from others. In your essay discuss the difference between wishful thinking and dreams followed up by planning and hard work.
