• In the Prologue, An Unexpected Audience, magic was outlawed in the four kingdoms. In all but the Southern Kingdom the practice of magic was punishable by death.

• In the Southern Kingdom magical beings were sentenced to life working in internment-like camps.

• In the Southern Kingdom, King Champion was perhaps easier on magical beings because his own mother had been beheaded when he was a child on suspicion of having an interest in magic.
