Objective

Objective: Part 1 A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth is an epic novel published in 1993 which tells the story of four families in India in the early 1950s after British occupation has ended and the India/Pakistan Partition has taken place. The plot and themes of A Suitable Boy revolve around Hindu/Muslim animosity, the status of lower caste peoples, land reform, family relationships and arranged marriage. In this lesson, students are introduced to the novel and will research and discuss its author, Vikram Seth.

1) Teacher Lecture: Introduce the class to the novel and author. A Suitable Boy, published in 1993, is an epic novel set in India in the early 1950s and explores themes of Hindu/Muslim animosity, castes, land reform, family relationships and arranged marriage.
