Lesson 1 (from Part 1, Chapter 1)
Objective
The loss of a parent is the way the story begins for Jeff and for the readers. Today's objective is to talk about the importance of a parent and what the loss of a parent might do to a child who is still developing.
Lesson
1. Have each student make a list of the things that a parent can provide to a children
2. In smaller groups, have students discuss whether they think they would have been able to get to where they are now without the support of their parent(s). Why or why not?
3. As a class, have the students discuss whether they think Jeff is better off without his mother. Why or why not? How might Jeff's life be affected by not having a mother around constantly? Can a father take the place of a mother in a parenting situation? Why or why not?
