· In the Prologue is a description of a young girl fleeing for her life and being recaptured by her captor.
· A woman named Irene shuts the book and calls it drivel as she throws it on the pile of things to donate.
· In Chapter 1, Laura is staring at her arm, which is cut and bleeding badly.
· She strips, showers, and then wraps her arm in reams of toilet paper.
· She tries to call her mother, but she gets no answer.
· When she calls her father to see if he can come over, his wife speaks up from the bathroom and tells him they have bridge.
· Laura tells him that she will be okay.
· On her way back to the bathroom, she steps on her jacket...
