· Although he was a yeoman farmer in France, his birthplace, he knows he will make a fortune as he did in Saint-Domingue.
· When he could not marry his love in France, the daughter of a vineyard owner, he had left and gone to Saint-Domingue where he gained property.
· When he returned to France, his love had married, had a daughter, and died.
